Trust and transparency aren’t just corporate buzzwords. They influence how audiences connect with a brand, a story, and the characters they care about.

For our fictional Off Campus marketing campaign, I wanted to explore how Amazon Prime Video could promote Hannah Wells in a way that respects her character, the original book fandom, and viewers discovering her story for the first time.

Rather than focusing entirely on her romance with Garrett, the campaign puts Hannah herself at the centre.

1. The campaign concept: Hannah Wells, More Than a Love Story

The first campaign concept is simple: introduce Hannah as a person with her own voice, ambitions, experiences, and choices.

Hannah’s love of music offers a natural starting point for character-led storytelling. It gives the campaign a way to explore her identity without reducing her to a romantic storyline.

Example social media copy:

Her voice. Her ambitions. Her story.

Meet Hannah Wells beyond the romance. Discover the music, memories, and motivations that make her who she is.

The objective is to create an authentic introduction that gives audiences a fuller understanding of Hannah while remaining faithful to her character.

2. What the Canva mockup could look like

For the visual direction, I’d use an editorial Instagram post featuring a real promotional photograph of Ella Bright as Hannah Wells.

The design would include:

  • Headline: Hannah Wells: More Than a Love Story.
  • Supporting line: Her voice. Her ambitions. Her story.
  • Colour palette: Warm cream, muted burgundy, and deep navy.
  • Typography: An elegant serif headline paired with clean, readable sans-serif text.
  • Photography: A suitable promotional still highlighting Hannah’s musical identity.
  • Footer: Off Campus | Fictional Marketing Concept | Signal & Strategies.

The layout would give the photograph plenty of space, with the headline and supporting copy arranged around it. The result would feel like an editorial character introduction rather than a conventional romance advertisement.

Visual reference: Use an appropriately sourced promotional image of Ella Bright as Hannah Wells and recreate the layout using a Canva Instagram post template. This is a proposed design direction, not an official Amazon Prime Video campaign.

3. Where trust and transparency come in

A visually appealing post is only one part of the strategy. The messaging behind it matters just as much.

Character-first representation: Hannah is presented as a character in her own right, not simply as Garrett’s love interest.

Honest promotion: The campaign avoids misleading viewers about the show’s themes or promising storylines that the adaptation may not deliver.

Respect for the source material: Existing readers are acknowledged without promising that every scene or detail from the novel will appear on screen.

Authentic engagement: Instead of relying on engagement bait, the campaign invites fans to discuss Hannah’s character and what makes her memorable.

For example, a follow-up post could ask:

What’s one thing about Hannah Wells that you wish more people understood?

This encourages meaningful conversation while allowing fans to bring their own interpretations to the discussion.

4. Turning one post into a campaign

The initial character introduction could become a small, cohesive social media series:

  1. More Than a Love Story: Introduce Hannah beyond her romance.
  2. Her Story, Her Voice: Explore her musical identity and personal ambitions.
  3. Book to Screen, Honestly: Acknowledge the original novel and communicate transparently about the adaptation.
  4. Real Character, Real Conversation: Invite thoughtful audience discussion.

Each post has a distinct purpose, but the same visual identity ties the series together.

5. What marketers can learn from this

Trust is built through consistency between what a campaign promises and what the audience actually experiences.

Character-led marketing gives audiences a reason to connect beyond a single promotional hook. Transparency helps protect that connection by setting honest expectations and respecting the people engaging with the content.

For freelancers, this is also a useful mock-project exercise. You can demonstrate your ability to develop a campaign concept, establish a visual direction, write social copy, and explain the strategic reasoning behind each creative decision.

You don’t need a real client to demonstrate thoughtful marketing. You need a clear objective, a well-developed concept, and an honest explanation of how your work would serve its audience.

The takeaway: A strong campaign doesn’t just make a character recognisable. It gives audiences a reason to understand, connect with, and trust the story being told.
