What a fictional character can teach us about the future of discoverability
Social media marketing is changing. Audiences no longer discover content exclusively through hashtags, search engines or their Instagram feeds. They increasingly use conversational AI tools, platform search bars, recommendation systems and creator-led communities to find information.
For freelancers and digital marketers, this creates an interesting challenge: how do we make content discoverable when the way people search is evolving?
At Signal & Strategies, I wanted to explore this question through a speculative marketing campaign inspired by Allie Hayes from Elle Kennedy’s Off-Campus series.
Allie is more than a character in a college romance. She’s a useful creative starting point for examining audience interests, content discovery and the importance of understanding people beyond their initial search.
The campaign concept is simple: Search Her Story.
This is an independent mock campaign, not an official collaboration with the author, publisher or streaming platforms.
1. The campaign concept: Search Her Story
The objective is to demonstrate how a freelancer could build a connected discovery strategy around an entertainment property.
Rather than creating disconnected social media posts, the campaign would connect short-form content, searchable website articles and audience engagement into one coherent experience.
For example, someone discovering Allie through a short video might subsequently search for her character profile, read a relationship analysis or explore a wider Off-Campus reading guide.
Each piece of content serves a different purpose.
- TikTok and Instagram Reels: Introduce the character through short, engaging editorial content.
- Instagram carousels: Explore character development, motivations and memorable story moments.
- Website articles: Provide detailed character profiles, book discussions and reading guides.
- Search-friendly FAQs: Answer specific questions readers may have about the character and series.
- Community content: Encourage thoughtful discussions, polls and reader interpretations.
The strategy isn’t to publish everywhere simply because every platform exists. It’s to give each channel a clear job.
2. AI search is changing the discovery journey

Traditional SEO remains important, but digital marketers also need to consider how people discover information through AI-powered search experiences.
A reader might ask a conversational search tool, “Which Off-Campus character would appeal to someone who enjoys independent, creative women?”
That question is more descriptive than a simple keyword such as “Allie Hayes.”
It reflects a wider shift towards natural-language queries, contextual recommendations and searches that combine several interests.
For freelancers, this means creating content that answers real questions clearly and provides enough context to be useful.
A practical approach includes:
- Writing descriptive headings that reflect genuine audience questions.
- Providing clear, accurate answers before expanding into deeper analysis.
- Connecting related articles through meaningful internal links.
- Maintaining consistent character names, series information and terminology.
- Adding original interpretation rather than merely repeating information already available elsewhere.
There is an important distinction here: writing useful content can improve its accessibility to search systems, but no particular format guarantees that an AI system will cite or recommend a website.
The goal is to create content that deserves to be discovered.
3. A mock social media campaign

Imagine a freelancer pitching a discovery campaign for an entertainment brand interested in attracting new readers or viewers.
The campaign could use three creative executions.
Post one: Instagram carousel
Headline: You Know the Character. But Have You Explored Her Story?
Slide one introduces Allie Hayes.
Slide two explores her interests and personality.
Slide three examines how her choices shape her story.
Slide four directs readers towards a longer character analysis on the campaign website.
Strategic purpose: Move an audience from a quick social interaction to deeper editorial content.
Post two: TikTok or Instagram Reel
Opening text: “Searching for your next fictional favourite?”
The video introduces Allie through a series of character-focused observations, using original graphics, licensed assets where authorised, or properly permitted imagery.
The caption invites viewers to explore the character guide.
Strategic purpose: Test whether character-led discovery content attracts new audiences and encourages meaningful engagement.
Post three: Search-led website article
Headline: Who Is Allie Hayes? A Character Guide to Off-Campus
The article provides a clear introduction, relevant context, related character links and a reading guide.
It also answers closely related questions readers might search for, without filling the page with repetitive keywords.
Strategic purpose: Create an evergreen destination that remains useful beyond the lifespan of an individual social media post.
4. What happens when AI becomes part of the workflow?
AI tools can support a campaign at several stages, but their usefulness depends on how they are applied.
For a freelancer, AI could help organise audience research, identify possible content gaps, cluster search questions and generate alternative campaign concepts.
It could also assist with analysing performance data, provided the marketer has appropriate data and checks the results carefully.
However, AI-generated suggestions should not automatically become published content.
Character details need verification. Search insights need interpretation. Creative decisions need a human perspective.
For this campaign, I would use AI to explore potential audience questions, then manually review the ideas against the books, available audience research and the campaign’s actual objectives.
The technology supports the process. It does not replace editorial judgement.
5. Looking ahead: Three developments freelancers should prepare for
Conversational discovery
People may increasingly describe what they want rather than enter short keyword combinations. Marketers should understand the underlying question, not merely the words used to express it.
Connected content experiences
A social post, website article and community discussion can work together. The value comes from their combined role in the discovery journey, not from publishing identical content across every platform.
More scrutiny of authenticity
As AI-generated content becomes easier to produce, original insights, credible sourcing, transparency and recognisable editorial judgement become increasingly important ways to differentiate a brand.
These are strategic directions worth preparing for, not guarantees about how every platform will evolve.
6. How would we measure success?
A campaign needs measurable objectives rather than a collection of attractive graphics.
For the Search Her Story concept, I would consider:
- Discovery: Reach, relevant impressions and new visitors.
- Engagement: Saves, shares, meaningful comments and video completion.
- Search performance: Relevant organic clicks, impressions and engagement with target pages.
- Content journeys: Internal-link clicks and movement between related articles.
- Conversion: Newsletter subscriptions or other clearly defined actions, where relevant and appropriately disclosed.
The specific KPIs would depend on the campaign objective and available analytics. A campaign designed to build awareness should not be judged by exactly the same measures as one designed to generate subscriptions.
Final thoughts
Allie Hayes provided the creative starting point, but the larger lesson is about the future of marketing.
Discoverability is not simply a matter of appearing on a platform. It’s about understanding what an audience wants to know, creating something genuinely useful and making it easier for people to find their way to it.
For freelancers, a speculative campaign like this can also become a portfolio project. It demonstrates the ability to connect creative thinking with SEO, social media strategy, AI-assisted research and measurable business objectives.
At Signal & Strategies, that’s the kind of work I want to explore: not just what marketers can publish today, but how they can build thoughtful strategies for the way people may discover content tomorrow.
Because the future of marketing isn’t only about being seen. It’s about being useful when someone is looking.
